The Gunners' boss remains confident that his side can persist in handling with fitness issues after revealing that forward Kai Havertz will not return for several more weeks.

Extended Absence for German Star

The German forward has been absent since the summer due to an operation on his knee. Hoped to come back at the start of this month, the manager stated the player faced a hurdle when increasing his recovery and was unable to move forward “to the next level.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a team that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Tactical Decisions for Midweek Fixture

This news creates a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. Arteta must choose between sticking with Mikel Merino, who got a goal in an unfamiliar forward role against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who came back from a muscle injury as a substitute. Veteran striker Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.

Fitness Doubts Remain

Additional concerns affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the heart of the defence for the table-toppers.

Arteta feels the significant outlay on squad depth during the summer has placed the club in a far better place to deal with such setbacks.

Questioned if increased squad depth was benefiting their title quest, the manager agreed. “Indeed, as this campaign has presented greater challenges in some areas, and now the situation with the backline,” he noted.

“We learned from the past that we have to use players in different positions, and they need to be prepared to fulfil different roles if we aim to challenge at the highest level. And the example of Mikel Merino.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Star

Commenting on the complication highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “His recovery was progressing. He failed to advance to the next level and now the signs are like we have unlocked that.”

Arteta expressed his eagerness to welcome him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, for me, I love so much for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his attitude. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
