Cameron Norrie secured the most notable success of his professional journey by coming back from a early deficit to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

Although he had before beaten Alcaraz on two occasions, this triumph marks Norrie's first ever victory over a reigning world No 1.

"Enormous. So big for me," stated Norrie, who is now the newest UK male player in history to overcome a world No 1. "Coming back from health issues last year, I fell in the first round of qualifiers here. I just sought to enjoy my tennis in the closing months of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the most significant win of my career, my initial victory over the world No 1 and likely the most in-form competitor in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive run of nine finals in a row and 17 successive premier event victories, which was the best series of results in the Spaniard's young career.

Game Analysis

The top seed looked to be advancing smoothly to success early on as he sailed past the initial stanza. However, the British contender slowly fought his way into the match by serving with improved accuracy and pulling the Spaniard into prolonged, physical rallies. His persistent shot tolerance and dependability steadily took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old seemed especially uneasy striking his signature shot, which has been the most effective stroke in the game for a large part of this year, haemorrhaging 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie offered his opponent minimal unforced errors, keeping up his steadiness, physicality and penetration throughout while performing well on serve and choosing his moments to move inside the baseline and play aggressively.

In the tight final games, Norrie superbly held his composure to defeat the top competitor in the sport.

Personal Context

After battling for months due to a serious physical setback and difficulties with his game, Norrie fell as low as 91st globally this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the Roland Garros round of 16 subsequently, this triumph further underlines the experienced player's improvement as he seeks to return to the top 20 and further. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his remarkable success, is yet to figure out how to deliver his best tennis in indoor conditions.
