The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
