The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
